The fabric of an independent woman: Diane Von Furstenberg shares her inspirational story on The conversation
Watching Diane Von Furstenberg talk about her life and her views on The conversation I thought: Wow this is aclassy lady, she has poise and confidence and she speaks with an assurance that mesmerizes and captivates. She is truly an inspiring woman and not only is she an entrepreneurial success story but she is also a role model for feminism and an innovator.Diane’s mother was a Holocaust Survivor and possessed an inner strength that allowed her to carry on even after she suffered such brutal atrocities.Despite the odds, Diane’s mother got married and was able to have a child even though they told her she wouldn’t be able to after wasting away to 49lbs. Diane explains that her mother always encouraged her to be a strong woman and to never be afraid of doing anything that she wanted to do.
This strength of character was most definitely imbued in Diane, and as she talks about life and love she possesses a daring and a boldness a certain “chutzpah” and verve that make her such a firebrand. Diane says to Amanda de Cadenet: ”I didn’t know what I was going to do but I knew the woman I wanted to be an independent woman.” I think that it is truly remarkable that she had such a clear vision of who she wanted to be and what she wanted to accomplish. In a New York Times article “The princess who is everywhere” Diane said: “The minute I knew I was about to be Egon’s wife, I decided to have a career. I wanted to be someone of my own, and not just a plain little girl who got married beyond her desserts.”
She was a woman who married a prince the ultimate fairy tale “happily ever after”, but yet she did not accept her rank and privilege as her fate she was determined to create her own way of life, her own source of sustenance, a project of her own- even if she didn’t financially need to. She started her clothing line on her own volition but she did it because being an independent woman was something she needed like air and water, Diane needed to do and work and create.
And create she did. While working for an Italian clothing maker Diane learned how to print on fabric and she designed prints for the designer .She made a deal, she would create clothes to sell in America using the Italian designer’s fabrics and prints. In 1973 Diane designed her signature Wrap dress which became emblematic of the 1970’s, so much so, that there is a wrap dress hanging in the Smithsonian institution. . “No one was making a little bourgeois dress, so I did,” she told Newsweek in her 1976 cover story. That little “bourgeois dress” became so popular that it not only became synonymous with the working woman in the 1970’s but it also made a huge comeback in the 90’s(Carrie Bradshaw often wore DVF) and that popularity has only intensified with the passing years. DVF flash mobs recently caused quite a stir around the streets of NYC, each of the DVF groupies donning a signature wrap in a beautiful colorful print. And DVF sample sales attract lines that seem miles long waiting in anticipation to find a piece of DVF’s designs to call their own.
I am a connoisseur of all things DVF including her perfume Diane(available at sephora) , and the fascinating biography “A Signature Life”. And for me it was really cool to see her talking about things like life, love, independence, aging etc. because it really gave this whole new dimension to Diane Von Furstenberg as a designer, and it even gave a new dimension to her designs. Her designs have strong, bold prints and colors. They are made from modern fabrics and cut in the most flattering way, so that it flatters all figures and body types. Diane’s designs, are bold &classy, sophisticated yet edgy and captivatingly beautiful. And after learning a little bit about Diane one very quickly realizes that she is everything her clothes are about, empowering women and doing so with immense beauty, poise, and strength.
If you haven’t seen this past episode of the conversation you should check it out, it is truly inspiring.
